Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about camps, private coaching, and riding with Dusty Forks. Can't find your answer? Send Matt a message — he'll get back to you within 24 hours.

Choosing the Right Program
Which camp is right for my kid?
If your child can ride on two wheels but hasn't been on trails before, Dust Devils Beginners (Ages 10 & under) is the right fit. If they've ridden trails and can brake and steer comfortably, Dust Devils Intermediate (Ages 8–14) will challenge them more. Still not sure? Send Matt a message with a quick description of your rider's experience and he'll help you choose.
Can adults join the camps?
The camps are designed for riders ages 10–17. Adults are not able to join group camps, but private 1-on-1 coaching and Family Plan sessions are available year-round for riders of any age. Book a private session and Matt will tailor it to your skill level.
What's the minimum age to join a camp?
There's no strict minimum age — it depends more on ability than age. The key requirement is that your child can already ride independently on two wheels and is starting to stand on their pedals. If you're unsure, reach out and Matt can help assess if your rider is ready.
What's the difference between group camps and private coaching?
Group camps run on a fixed schedule in June with up to 5 riders per group — great for kids who benefit from a social learning environment. Private coaching is available year-round, on your schedule, at your preferred trail. It's more flexible and more personalized. See the full program details page for a side-by-side comparison.
What's the difference between the 4-week series and the weekend camp?
Both deliver the same 6 hours of certified coaching and cover the same skills — the weekend camp is simply condensed into three sessions over one weekend. It's the right choice if weeknight commitments make the weekly series tough to fit in.
Camps & Scheduling
When and where are the June 2026 camps?
All camps are held at West Rivers Edge, Fort Saskatchewan:

Dust Devils — Beginners (Ages 10 & under) · Mondays June 1, 8, 15, 22 · 6:00–7:30PM
Dust Devils — Intermediate (Ages 8–14) · Tuesdays June 2, 9, 16, 23 · 6:00–7:30PM
Dirt Roots — Teen (Ages 14–17) · Wednesdays June 3, 10, 17, 24 · 6:00–8:00PM
Dust Devils Weekend — Beginners (Ages 10 & under) · June 19–21 · Fri 5:00–7:00PM · Sat & Sun 10:00AM–12:00PM
Dust Devils Weekend — Intermediate (Ages 8–14) · June 19–21 · Fri 7:15–9:15PM · Sat & Sun 12:45–2:45PM
What happens if it rains?
Light rain doesn't stop us — trail riding in drizzle is part of the experience! Sessions are cancelled for severe weather, thunderstorms, or poor air quality (AQHI 7 or higher). You'll be notified as early as possible and Matt will work to reschedule. See the full cancellation policy for details.
How many riders are in each group?
A maximum of 5 riders per group — always. This ensures every rider gets real attention and real feedback, not just time on the bike. The 5:1 rider-to-instructor ratio is one of the key reasons Dusty Forks riders progress quickly.
What happens after I register?
Matt will follow up within 24 hours to confirm your spot. You'll receive a waiver by email that must be completed before the first session — please do this as soon as you get it so we can get straight to riding on day one. You'll also get details on where to meet, what to bring, and payment by e-transfer will be arranged at that time.
Equipment & Preparation
What kind of bike does my child need?
A properly sized, well-functioning mountain bike with hand brakes is required. BMX bikes and bikes with training wheels are not suitable. Bring a spare tube that fits your child's wheel size. If you're unsure whether your bike is suitable, ask before registering.
Is a helmet mandatory?
Yes — a properly fitted helmet is mandatory for all participants, no exceptions. Knee pads are strongly recommended for kids. Gloves are a good idea too.
What else should we bring?
Water bottle or hydration pack, a small trail snack, sunscreen, bug spray, and weather-appropriate clothing — layers are always a good idea for June evenings in Fort Saskatchewan. See the full what to bring list on the services page.
